Each day through December 24, Keeper Notes will highlight a different option for WoSo-related holiday gifts (or something to buy for yourself!). And in the interest of full disclosure, many of them are from Keeper Notes or Soccer 4All. Feel free to add your own suggestions in the comments below. Reach out to firstname.lastname@example.org with questions.
DAY 12 The Keeper Notes NWSL Almanac
A great last-minute gift since you can download this 200-page color PDF immediately after purchase! The 2016 Post-Season Keeper Notes Almanac includes statistics from all four seasons of NWSL, stat leaders, club jersey histories, playoff match reports and much more! Earlier versions are also available, and the almanac will soon be available via print-on-demand services on Amazon. View samples pages at Issuu.com.
DAY 11 USWNT & NWSL goalkeeper jerseys
Soccer 4 All offers WoSo fans the chance to get the goalkeeper jerseys for their favorite USWNT or NWSL goalkeeper jersey. Jerseys are available in men’s and women’s sizes, and can be customized with any name and number in the authentic letters/numbers (though note that FIFA champions patch is not available). Email email@example.com for ordering info.
DAY 10 Soccer Scarves!
Soccer’s not soccer without a soccer scarf! And there are new designs popping up all the time – some from NWSL supporters clubs, some from AO chapters, and occasionally designs from official outlets. Here are links to a few options available now:
DAY 9 WoSo Books
You’ll probably have some downtime during the holidays, so treat yourself to the backstory of USWNT stars Carli Lloyd, Abby Wambach, Hope Solo or Michelle Akers … or English legend Kelly Smith. All have legit biographies available for purchase – just be sure to avoid accidentally purchasing the “young adult” version (which is usually the cheaper, shorter option with a slightly different title):
There are also books co-authored by Mia Hamm and Brandi Chastain, but these are more motivational/instructional soccer books instead of biographies. And you can’t call yourself a WoSo fan if you haven’t read The Girls of Summer by Jere Longman – if nothing else, it provides a lot of background about the long-term struggles the USWNT players have had with US Soccer.
If you’re looking for even more WoSo titles:
It’s Not the Glory – The Remarkable First 30 Years of the USWNT
Beyond Bend It Like Beckham – The Global Phenomenon of Women’s Soccer
Enduring Spirit – Restoring Professional Soccer to Washington
Goals & Dreams – A Celebration of Canadian Women’s Soccer
Not recommended: the aforementioned young adult versions of player biographies, any WoSo book of fewer than 100 pages (usually lots of fluff and big photos and not much else), and “The US Women’s Soccer Team: An American Success Story” by Clemente Lisi. I made the mistake of buying this one a few years back only to find it was simply excerpts from every other WoSo book I’d already read.
DAY 8 The Gift of Charity
Donate to your favorite soccer cause in the name of a friend or family member as a special holiday gift. Check out gofundme.org and search for soccer. You’ll find many worthy causes! Here are a few of the Keeper’s favorites:
ª Fund the Afghanistan Women’s National Team (several of these players have risked their lives to continue playing the beautiful game)
* Fund the US Deaf WNT
• Make a donation to the US Soccer Foundation, the charitable arm of US Soccer. The foundation gives grants every year to provide soccer resources to underserved communities.
* Check out Kizazi.com – you can a buy a soccer ball that helps fight world poverty. Really!
DAY 7 WoSo Videos
You can never watch enough soccer, and you can never have too many soccer DVDs (yeah, it’s an almost outdated technology, but still …). Here’s a list of WoSo DVDs available for purchase and/or trade. And of course, there’s always the NWSL and WoSoNostalgia YouTube channels.
Highlight/full-game videos for the 2003 Women’s World Cup
Note that there has not been a wide release of WWC highlight/game videos since 2003, so these are the most recent videos available. VHS videos were released for the 1991, 1995 and 1999 tourneys, so you may be able to find them or other videos on Ebay. Some have been posted to YouTube:
All 1991 USA WWC games
The 1995 WWC final and several highlights
Most 1999 USA WWC games and several highlights
NCAA Div1 championship games on Amazon
About 20 years’ worth of championship games (and some semifinal games) are available for purchase on DVD via Amazon. That means you can watch an 18-year-old Abby Wambach help Florida defeat North Carolina in the 1998 final, or enjoy seeing Portland’s Christine Sinclair & Megan Rapinoe score against Jill Ellis’ UCLA squad in the 2005 championship.
The biggest WoSo video library ever
“The Tape Crusader” Dave Wasser has amassed a library of soccer videos so extensive that U.S. Soccer has often reached out to him when they need old highlights. The library even includes WUSA and WPS games. Just email Dave for details about ordering videos – and be sure to tell him The Keeper sent you!
DAY 6 WoSo fan tees
The internet offers a wealth of WoSo tshirts – whether designed by players, fans or official entities. Below are links to several interesting designs. Feel free to share a special WoSo tshirt design you’ve found in the comments.
Ashlyn Harris‘ collection at Sqor
The Women’s Soccer Doesn’t Need Saving tshirt pictured above can be ordered by emailing Keeper Notes. Cost is $20 per tshirt, including shipping. Available in adult S, M, L and XL.
DAY 5 O Canada
Many NWSL fans are either Canadian or Americans who have grown to love the Canadians on their favorite NWSL team. There are lots of Canadian WoSo gift possibilities:
Tickets for February 4 celebration match (Canada v Mexico) in Vancouver
Items from Erin McLeod’s Peau de Loop collection
Official Canada Soccer merch, including the Tshirt commemorating CanWNT’s back-to-back podium finishes in Olympic soccer
DAY 4 NWSL Season Tickets
What better way to share the beautiful game than to give the gift of season tickets? Here are the links to ticket webpages for all 10 NWSL clubs, and some may have holiday offers.
DAY 3 Women’s World Cup art
Your living room and/or bedroom probably has a big empty space that’s just begging for some artwork, so here are a few suggestions for WoSo home decor gifts:
Art of Sport WWC
This arty-sporty website (based in San Francisco) offers stylish soccer-themed art in gallery-quality prints, with the option of framing. They designed an entire series around the Women’s World Cup, as well as series for the Premier League, the 2014 World Cup, MLB and more. Sign up for their newsletter to get 20% off!
WWC 2015 champions poster
It’s not too late to get a poster of the 2015 WWC champs celebrating on the victory podium in Vancouver!
Keeper Notes’ USWNT 30th Anniversary poster
Available with or without framing
Women’s World Cup official design
The FIFA online store still has several high-end options for the official artwork of the 2015 Women’s World Cup.
DAY 2 – Women’s World Cup 2015 “leftovers”
Best leftovers ever – that’s how I’d describe any remaining merch related to last summer’s Women’s World Cup. Below is a short list of WWC items that Soccer 4 All still has in stock (email firstname.lastname@example.org with inquiries) and you can also find various 2015 apparel on Ebay or occasionally in the “active apparel” racks at Marshalls/TJ Maxx/Ross.
